Motivational Interviewing is just reflective listening.
Myth
This is a common misconception within understanding Motivational Interviewing. One of the core concepts of Motivational Interviewing IS reflective listening, but that is not what Motivational Interviewing is.
Think of it this way, let’s say you are learning the skillset of basketball. Within basketball, there are several smaller skills that are used throughout playing the game. Skills like learning how to dribble the ball, passing the ball and shooting the ball. If someone JUST dribbled constantly and didn’t shoot or pass, they aren’t playing basketball. It’s the combination of all these micro skills used at one time that make up “Basketball”. The same goes for Motivational Interviewing, it is a series of micro skills including reflective listening, but also including guiding the conversation, partnering with clients and actually listening.
When you combine these micro skills together into a conversation that is fidelity Motivational Interviewing, you start to get the evidence-based outcomes.
