Can you learn Motivational Interviewing in 1 training?
This could be complicated to answer, but ultimately it depends on what you mean by “learned”. If you mean, knowledge and understanding some of the concepts than very well this could be a fact. As many people walk away from 1 training in Motivational Interviewing feeling confident in the knowledge of the process.
However, if “learned” means the ability to use the knowledge skill fully, the answer is False. Because according to Miller & Rollnick 2013, they state “The only way to document MI skillfulness is through observed practice (video, audio or live)…and Establish criterion performance level of proficiency for MI providers in a clinical and provide training, feedback and coaching until each provider reaches it.”
Think of it this way, if you are learning a new sport (skill), you might learn the concept of the sport, how to play the game, what the goals are. But it isn’t until you start practicing the game that you realize mentally you understand it all, but there is a disconnect in the ability to do it, UNTIL you practice. Once you start practicing the skill and the sport, your body becomes more accustomed to the skill and muscle memory takes over.
So Fact or Myth?
Overall, it depends on what your goals are as a practitioner, do you want to understand the concepts only? Or do you want to be a skilled expert at the skill? Only you can decide on the outcomes you want.
Communication Challenge:
Next time you learn a new concept, for your professional or personal life. Remember that the knowledge of that new concept might differ from your ability to instantly apply that concept skillfully. Give yourself time to practice and learn, and eventually you will be rocking that new concept or skill!
