Train the Trainer=MI Sustainability
Myth: There is a difference between being able to train on a topic and being able to coach and teach on a topic. Many people can train, but not everyone can coach and teach. This is why this Fact vs. Myth is a myth. Adding in a specific Motivational Interviewing trainer will help create monthly or yearly training opportunities for your agencies, but it won’t necessarily teach your team members to be proficient or even competent in Motivational Interviewing.
Assuming your desire to complete a train the trainer program is to create MI sustainability throughout your agency, the best bet would be to teach your team members how to coach Motivational Interviewing. Once trained coaches, not only can they teach others about Motivational Interviewing through the lens of coding, but then they can help coach each other on how to improve their skills.
Because of IFIOC’s commitment to helping agencies achieve MI sustainability, we offer our MICA coding training classes quarterly for the public. But some agencies choose to do a private MICA coding class too.
We’ve seen agencies find success in creating sustainability through creating a core group of “MI coaches” that help code their team members conversations and coach on improvement.
