Communication tip: WAIT
Do you sometimes wish you were a better communicator? Either at work, at home or with friends? We’ve got a communication tip for you that is simple, effective and hopefully SUPER easy to remember!
WAIT.
Why
Am
I
Talking?
This is such a valuable question to be asking ourselves in conversations. Why am I talking? Am I talking to relate to someone? Am I talking because there is silence and I’m uncomfortable? Am I asking questions to try and better understand? Am I talking because it’s my turn?
Instead, please remember to WAIT. Why am I talking?
The goal is to listen more. To listen actively, and to listen to not respond, but to give the person space to share, space to breathe and a chance to clear their head. The more we remember to WAIT, the more we will most likely hear from other people.
And in a world where there is a lot of talking, a lot of noise and a lot of activity, someone sitting with you, just listening, can make all the difference in the world.
Communication Challenge: Next time you are having a conversation, remember the tip WAIT. Try to remember to listen more and if you must talk, think about why you are choosing to talk, rather than just instinctively talking.
