View our various Motivational Interviewing Trainings below
The following trainings are scheduled throughout the year and by request at the beautiful IFIOC training facility in the historic Flour Mill overlooking Riverfront Park, the river, and the falls in Spokane, Washington. The majority of these trainings are accredited for Continuing Education (CE) by a variety of accrediting bodies. Please check in advance to see if the CE we offer aligns with your licensing requirements.
All of these trainings can be provided to any audience at any location by request. Additionally, agencies/organizations can request web-based trainings. IFIOC is developing web-based trainings that will be open for general registration in the future.
Based on research in both Motivational Interviewing and Technology Transfer, this would include a 4-day training series: the 2-day Introduction to Motivational Interviewing with a subsequent 2-day Advanced Motivational Interviewing approximately one month after the initial training. Research shows that there is no sustained application of MI skills when participants attend a single day or several day training on Motivational Interviewing. What research does reflect is that if the initial training is followed-up with multiple ‘booster’ trainings that discuss integration and focus on skill development, that participants show sustained skill acquisition at follow-up reviews. While there is notable sustained skill acquisition, research reflects that participants are not applying MI with fidelity as an Evidence-Based Practice. The literature shows this is acquired through ‘coding’ and coaching using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale.
This two-day training on Motivational Interviewing will provide a basic overview of the fundamentals of MI as well as the latest updates. Based on the physics of behavior change, participants will learn assessment and communication skills that foster sustained behavior change by tapping intrinsic motivation. Aside from a didactic approach, there will be video examples, audience participation, and skill practice.
This 2-day training is for professionals who have received introductory MI training and want to sharpen and improve their use of MI. This is an opportunity for immersion in skill practice and development. There is some exposure to the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale to understand the mechanics of MI and how to develop proficiency. The training will analyze and dissect highly competent MI sessions to further explore ‘types of talk’ in seamless MI based conversations.
MI Skill Building capitalizes on the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale to ‘code’ conversations to measure for fidelity to this Evidence-Based Practice. MI Skill Building takes on a variety of forms based on the needs of the individual and/or group. While all skill building includes ‘coding,’ there are an array of activities to practice skill development and mastery, dissect and analyze MI sessions, and receive individualized feedback.
This one-day training is for professionals who have had prior MI training and are looking for the latest updates in MI research and practice. There is a crosswalk of the latest developments in the field of MI and the interface with existing body of knowledge and information. Aside from discussing practical application of new developments, there are new activities for practice and updating skills.
This one-day training is for healthcare practitioners who want to improve patient outcomes, as well as increase job satisfaction and reduce stress. Motivational Interviewing is a healthcare best-practice focusing on communication as a fundamental intervention leading to sustained behavior change. The emphasis is on efficient and effective collaboration that maximizes impact within the realities of time constraints in healthcare today. The training tailors MI to the 'Assessment-then-Intervention' medical model with specific healthcare scenarios. This training is an excellent introduction to MI in healthcare, provides updates and a refresher for those who have attended previous MI trainings, and is the foundation to pursuing 'competency' or 'proficiency' standards in MI per fidelity to the best-practice model.
This Motivational Interviewing series is set up on a six month cycle of monthly half-day sessions where a small group use a MI lens to discuss cases, role-play client/patient scenarios, and deconstruct their actual sessions for professional learning and growth. Each participant had the option of adding MITI coding to his/her learning experience.
This 3-day immersion retreat is for those who can never seem to get enough of Motivational Interviewing. It is an advanced series that is tailored specifically to the interests and needs of those who register. The IFIOC trainers develop the agenda in advance in partnership with the small group of participants. There are numerous opportunities for practice, coaching, coding, and skill development.
This 6-day advanced Motivational Interviewing training is for those professionals who will be using the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale to understand the mechanics of MI and how to develop proficiency. The MITI is a validated and reliable coding instrument to measure how closely a conversation aligns with Motivational Interviewing from a fidelity perspective and to provide specific feedback for improvement. This 6-day series is divided into two or three sessions to directly align with MITI's 40-hour interrater reliability threshold. There will be multiple audio and video tapes to code and deconstruct as well as opportunities for participants to record their own sessions to code.
This 3-day advanced Motivational Interviewing training is popular with those who want to understand the functional mechanics of MI. Participants will be immersed in the Motivational Interviewing Treatment Integrity (MITI) scale to understand how to effectively measure MI and how to develop proficiency. There will be multiple audio and video tapes to code and deconstruct as well as opportunities for participants to record their own sessions to code.
This 2-day advanced Motivational Interviewing training is tailored to those in leadership positions who see the value of this communication method in terms of more efficiently and effectively navigating resistance from the workforce and orchestrating alignment with the vision and mission of the organization.
This 2-day advanced training encompasses how to functionally orchestrate MI based communication when working with more than one person in a given setting. Participants will work to develop skills and strategies to increase their confidence in effectively applying MI to these more complex situations.
This 1-day training works with participants and their documentation requirements on how best to reflect the use of MI while adhering to their existing formats, structures, regulations, procedures, and policies.
This training is NOT the solution to all parenting struggles. Using Motivational Interviewing as a method of communication with both young and adult children can greatly reduce anger, threats, nagging, and power struggles. It provides a practical approach with simple insights that challenges what our brain and our culture models for parenting. Most all parents want to be good parents, and when being a loving parent is not enough, this approach can provide a structure on how to feel healthier in your parenting.
This 2-day Motivational Interviewing based training helps individuals and couples gain insight and clarity not only into their communication, but into their common and complementary values. This framework provides a model on how to effectively resolve interpersonal tension and feel a greater sense of integrity in what they contribute to a healthy relationship.
This 2-day training is for any individual who is seeking to gain insight into his/her behavior that feels stuck, defeating, frustrating, or redundant and wants to learn a proven method of moving forward in a healthier, solution focused approach. This can include a desire to get unstuck in general and move forward in life, and it can include managing any variety of difficult behaviors including chemical addictions, health (i.e. diet, exercise, disease management), smoking, gambling, etc.
